ActiveState - Why Open Source?
All software contains source code; proprietary or open source. Open source code is available to anyone that wishes to access and develop it whereas proprietary source code is tied to one entity and further development of code is restricted to only that entity. We believe that when many developers collaborate, bugs are found and fixed more quickly than in a proprietary software model resulting in better code and better software.
ActiveState is firmly rooted in the open source community as supporters and contributors. Our dynamic language distributions leverage and build upon the improvements and bug fixes produced by open source developers by building fully tested, ready to install versions of Perl, Python and Tcl that are given back to the open source community to use free of charge.
The millions of developers that use our builds of ActivePerl, ActivePython and ActiveTcl test and submit bugs which are fixed and incorporated into our language builds further strengthening the code.
